Steps After Failing to Protect Tenant Deposit

Last year, I started a tenancy but forgot to protect the tenant’s deposit with my chosen tenancy deposit scheme. What steps should I take now? Should I:

1. Protect the deposit immediately?
2. Return the deposit to the tenant?
3. Create a new tenancy agreement, as the current one is ending soon, and ensure the deposit is protected?

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.
